Week 1, Day 4, Activity 1

Aotearoa New Zealand is a country of mountains and valleys, dense forests, and sparkling oceans. At the centre of the South Island sits the tallest mountain in the country, Aoraki Mt Cook. It is the place where Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the top (summit) of Mt Everest, learned how to climb mountains. It was pretty difficult for him, at first, but Sir Edmund Hillary did not give up and, in 1953, he achieved this dream of climbing Mt Everest. His face can now be found on the New Zealand $5 note!
Let’s imagine that you met Sir Edmund Hillary in real life and were able to interview him.

On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.

1) How did you mentally prepare yourself before you climbed up Mt Everest?
2) What other interests did you like, other than climbing?
3) When did you want to climb up Mt Everest?
4) Who supported you the most?
5) What were your fears about climbing Mt Everest?

  1. Hey Caitlyn, its Jennae here!
I liked how you layed out your questions from 1-5 it looks nice. I think these questions are great questions to ask Sir Edmund Hillary. Although when you read the name Sir Edmund Hillary you think of the man who climbed Mount Everest and thats what you done. Most of your questions are about him climbing Mt Everest, it would be cool to find out more about his life like his school years was he good at school, did he enjoy it?
Do you wish to climb Mount Everest? WOuld you like to meet SIr Edmund Hillary?
Other than that this post was great!
    Well Done Caitlyn!

  2. Kia Ora Caitlyn,

My name is Rachel and I am working with the Summer Learning Journey team this year. It is wonderful to see that you are working hard on the SLJ and posting high quality answers on your blog. Way to go!

Like Jennae, I also really like it that you laid out the questions that you have for Sir Hillary in numerical order. I also really like that you have asked thoughtful and thought provoking questions about his mental preparation for the climb, his support system and his motivation to undertake the climb in the first place. It was incredibly dangerous and really difficult so I would imagine that it took a lot of courage to attempt it in the first place. I'm not sure that I would choose to climb a huge, ice and snow-covered mountain in a foreign country. What about you? I see that Jennae has also asked you the same question. We must be on the same page, she and I!

We'd both love to know what you think. If you have time please do write back and let us know if you would like to try mountain climbing one day. We hope that you'll be back online again soon!

    Bye for now,
    Rachel :)

  3. Hello Caitlyn,
Those are really good questions to ask to Sir Edmund Hillary. I really like the 'what are your other interests' because Edmund didn't only climb, he also did things like any other person as well. I definitely think that I would have more than 100 fears on climbing mt Everest, and even more. It was so interesting to see what goes on in your mind.

    Do you like adventuring?
